The Iceland Responsible Fisheries programme (IRF) held a seminar Monday 13 February at the Fish International exhibition in Bremen in cooperation with the Embassy of Iceland and the German - Icelandic Chambre of Commerce. The title of the seminar was “Responsible Fisheries in Icelandic Waters - Engagement through Certification of Fisheries based on the FAO-ISO model”. The seminar was well received; approx. 90 people attended.

Among speakers was Eggert Benedikt Gudmundsson, Chair of the IRF Marketing Board and CEO of fisheries company HB Grandi who gave an overview of the programme. Jóhann Sigurjónsson, Director General, Marine Research Institute gave a presentation on status of fish stocks in Icelandic waters and explained the scientific research in Icelandic waters.

Peter Marshall, CEO of Global Trust Certification Ltd. explained the certification of Icelandic fisheries under the Iceland Responsible Fisheries programme. The title of Mr Marshall’s talk was “Certification of Icelandic fisheries to FAO-ISO based model – a new horizon for fisheries”. Óskar Sigmundsson, General Manager of German Seafrozen did talk about the value of using the logo of origin to promote seafood from Iceland in the German market. The Icelandic Ambassador in Germany, Gunnar Snorri Gunnarsson made closing remarks.
