Thor: New Coastguard Cruiser

The new cruiser of the Icelandic Coast Guard, Thór, arrived to Reykjavík 27 October 2011. The vessel is important for the Coastguard and the fishing industry as well. The coastguard is in charge of preserving the country's interests and the fishing grounds.

The vessel is designed and equipped for various coastguard duties, search and rescure, fisheries enforcement, oil recovery operations, maritime surveillance, etc. The vessel, that was built in Chile, is the largest and best equipped vessel the Coastguard has. There was a great interest among the people of Iceland to see the new vessel. More than 5000 people stepped onboard to take a look at the vessel during the three days it was open to the public.
