The Minister of Fisheries sets quota for next fishing year

27 June 2015

The Minister of Fisheries and Agriculture, Mr. Sigurdur Ingi Johannsson, has taken a decision on the TAC for the next fishing year 2015-2016, starting on September 1. The Minister follows the advice of the Marine Research Institute (MRI) fully. MRI recently published a report on the status of fish stocks, showing generally good status of the main species, especially ground fish stocks. The cod quotas will be 239,000 tons, an increase of 21,000 tons from current fishing year. Haddock quotas will be increased as well, by 6,000 tons, and will become 36,400 tonnes.

Formal long term harvesting strategy and catch rules have been determined for the main fish species according to international laws and principles, tested and proven by ICES. Those are the key elements in management of fisheries in Iceland.

An increase in value of fish exports, due to increased quotas, is expected to amount to 7-8 billion ISK, given that  product prices will stay similar to those of the current fishing year.
