Two Complementary Specifications

Responsible Fisheries Management Specification

The following specification is based on the 1995 FAO Code of Conduct for Responsible Fisheries and on the FAO Guidelines for the Ecolabelling of Fish and Fishery Products from Marine Capture Fisheries (2005/2009). It is designed to be practical and will provide a means to bring together the many aspects of best practice.

Iceland Responsible Fisheries Chain of Custody Specification

The main objective of Iceland Responsible Fisheries Management Chain of Custody Certification is to provide an assurance for suppliers to demonstrate and claim that products originate from a Responsible Fisheries Management (RFM) certified fishery and minimise the risk of public confusion between certified and non certified fish products. To achieve this, a full product traceability system is required so products can be traced from their suppliers and tracked to their buyers.

A Technical Committee has developed and endorsed this Specification. The Committee had representation and inputs from throughout the supply chain and interested parties including; FAI members, The Marine Research Institute; Market Representatives; Federation of Icelandic Fish Processing Plants; National Association of Small Boat Owners; The Ministry of Fisheries and Agriculture; The Directorate of Fisheries; and The Federation of Icelandic Fishing Vessel Owners. This document defines the requirements for certification of Responsible Management and Fishing Practices.
